Q. How long have you been flying?
A. Over 60 years altogether. Foundation member of WMAA (when it was WRCS) and prior to the club formation
Q. Do you have your wings?
A. Only on full scale aircraft - (obtained GFPT). Not on models yet. (I've noticed birds mostly have them.) Q. What type of models do you fly?
A. Starting over on trainers after 20 odd years lay-off. (Changed to full size for a while, but you know with fuel prices - Back to models). I like most types.
Q. Would you like to fly helicopters?
A. I've tried them briefly. Glide angle is too steep when the whirly thing stops. I still have the pieces.
Q. What was your 1st model?
A. Boomerang glider (150mm chuckie from Coles) which my older brothers brought home in the 1940s.Then I built my own glidersfrom a my Dad's Radio & Hobbies magazine plan. Then designed and built my own gliders. First built up model was a 'Sun Bird' from the Sun News Pictorial (won 2nd prize in a school comp). This was followed by a rubber powered Ercoupe (Kiel Kraft). Then moved onto control liners (1960s). Turned to r/c (single channel Ercoupe, then proportional in 1970) with a Hustler, a Pilot kit Cessna 177, and a Parasol I bought from Max Wright.
Q. What got you interested in flying?
A. As a 4 year old I couldn't work out how the planes that flew over home stayed in the air when I couldn't Nearly tipped a Spitfire onto its prop at Essendon at the end of WWII. But that's another story.
Q. Have you found flying difficult or easy?
A. Flying is difficult. Crashing is easy. Self-taught (except full size). Found landings very difficult until I found the throttle control (got that tip from a RAAF Mirage pilot mate). Full size was much easier (better stick feed-back).
Q. What advice would you give someone who wants to fly model aircraft?
A. Don't use a Mustang to train on. Join a good club; Get a reliable brand of radio; Seek help from an instructor. (Don't forget the throttle control on landing approach.) Respect Isaac Newton’s law of modelling. (Gravity is awesome) Q. Would you like to fly in competitions?
A. Only for fun.

 James Carlon

Q. How long have you been flying?
A. I started about 25 years ago and then stopped for about 15 years due

to family commitments with young children
Q. Do you have your wings?
A. Yes Gold Wings
Q. What type/s of model/s do you fly?
A.  I like petrol engines and have models from 10cc up to 55cc.  For the

plane itself I don’t have any real preferences and really just pick

something that catches my eye.  I have just started to fly control line

     models and enjoying the experience.
Q. Would you like to fly helicopters?
A.  I have a few indoor electric models I can fly but not really interested in

     pursuing further.
Q. What got you interested in flying?
A.  Had an interest in aviation since a young boy and used to fly the Cox

plastic control line models as a young teenager.
Q. what was your first model?
A. A 40 size trainer
Q. Have you found flying difficult or easy?
A.  I’m at the stage where control inputs to make the plane fly basic patterns is relatively second nature.          The more difficult thing is using your judgement to adapt to different flying conditions or different models where the flight characteristics change considerably.
Q. What advice would you give to someone who wants to fly model aircraft?
A.  Before you even purchase your first model seek advice from an experienced club member, preferably instructor about the options available. They also can advise on the process of learning to fly. Make sure you purchase quality Radio Gear and under no circumstances should you skimp on a cheap on/off switch.  This is always the weakest link.  Buy a heavy duty switch from a quality manufacturer.
Q. Have you modified your plane?
A.  Not modified as such but all models require regular maintenance and checks to ensure they keep flying safely.
Q. Would you like to fly in competitions?
A.  No not really interested
Q. Do you have any other hobbies?
A.  I play guitar and design and build guitar valve amplifiers.
Q. Are you happy with your instructors at the field?
A.  Yes.  Dennis has helped me get my Gold Wings back after the 15 year lay off.  Mario Parcesepe is a good resource if you want to learn aerobatic manoeuvres. John is very dedicated and I’ve seen him help out many newcomers.
Q. How did you find the club?
A.  I’ve known of its existence for a long time – not sure really.
Q. Have you ever been a member of other RC Clubs?
A. Yes I’m also a member at Marcs in Laverton
Q. Have you ever visited any other RC Aero Clubs?
A.  No which makes me think I should do that.
Q. What do you think of the flying profile?
A. I think it’s a good way to get to know something about someone that you may not discuss at the field.

Terry J. Sidey

Q. How long have you been flying?
A. I began flying full-size fixed wing aircraft in 1973. I began flying RC model aircraft in 2000.
Q. Do you have your wings?
A. Yes—RC Bronze.
Q. What type/s of model/s do you fly?
A. I fly Fixed Wing models: 40 size, low and high wing, and tricycle and conventional wheel. And I use Mode 1. I am seeking relaxing enjoyment, which these simple types of models provide.
Q. Would you like to fly helicopters?
A. I have no desire to fly something that defies aerodynamic theory.
Q. What got you interested in flying?
A. I first became interested in full-size aircraft when I attended military airshows as a child. That led to my career in aviation. Much later, my son expressed an interest in RC models and I followed
Q. What was your first model?
A. As a young teenager, I built a large balsa and tissue-paper glider for myself and a small diesel-powered CL model for a neighbour. My first RC model was a  yellow Kyosho, 40-size, high-wing, conventional wheel trainer in 2000.
Q. Have you found flying difficult or easy?
A. Initially, I found achieving the comfort threshold of hand-eye orientation and coordination difficult because I flew only infrequently. However, when I began using a RC simulator, progress was rapid. Notwithstanding, currency is still my #1 challenge.
Q. What advice would you give to someone who wants to fly model aircraft?
A. Fly with a RC Club, use a good instructor, use a good simulator (if possible, using your normal field transmitter), and fly frequently until you achieve confidence. Also, it helps to start with a large amount of money or a rich benefactor.
Q. Have you modified your plane?
A. I have built and repaired my own aircraft; so therefore, yes.
Q. Would you like to fly in competitions?
A. Yes—when I can fly regularly. Competition is an excellent way to improve one’s skills and to socialise.
Q. Do you have any other hobbies?
A. No. I don’t really have the time just now.
Q. Are you happy with your instructors at the field?
A. Yes; but I haven’t really used them at WMAA. Regardless, I have always found my instructors to be very enthusiastic and helpful. Without them, flying would be much more expensive.
Q. How did you find the club?
A. I recall asking around other clubs and stores, and using the WWW. I applied to WMAA because the members tended to fly my types of aircraft and someone said hello to me when I first visited. Friendliness can be the determining factor in influencing a prospective club member to join.
Q. Have you ever been a member of other RC Clubs?
A. Yes. I have been a member of Sale and District Aeromodellers Club Inc (SADAC) in VIC and Tamworth Area Radio Model Aircraft Club Inc (TARMAC) in NSW.
Q. Have you ever visited any other RC Aero Clubs?
A. Yes—MARCS (Laverton North) and RAAF Williams Model Club (Laverton).
Q. What do you think of the flying profile?
A. It’s a tribute to the designer, who should be rewarded greatly

We all know that we have few members in the club who scratch build their own planes. But how many of us know what our members can do and what they have done or even invented, over the years within this great hobby of ours. So I wanted to do something for the club to recognise a few of our older members.

I heard that Max Wright has been flying for many years and I was told that he even build his own motor so I rang up Max and ask him if he would be interested in doing a member’s profile on him. When I was doing the profile I found out what he had done over the years and I tell you I was amazed.

1st prize in 1954 Max came in

Well Max Wright has been flying for over 70 years, as a young lad he first flew rubber band models. Then he moved onto free flight and then onto control lines. Max use to race control lines and he even made a speed wagon that was designed by Harold De Bolt. Top speed reached was 140 milesper hour on 12th thou of 70 foot line -

6 laps to half a mile. It must
have been fast in it’s day.

The engine Max made was the Vampire 61 First Proto type and was made of aluminium. Production was made by Magnesium dye cremated Black. It’s Been Clocked doing 140 miles an hour. Piston made by Rolloy Company (cast) Ring Phonics Ring Company Mon chloride cedic acid.

Spec
Vampire 61 10cc
Made in 1952
Made 2 dozen
Inch 64 bore ¾ inch stroke
Rorty disc induction

He used to make his own nitro methane as he had his own still

When Max was learning to fly radio control he was using 3 channel push button radios as soon as he implemented the 4 channel Max began to fly with no problem. 3 repairable crashes, whenever I crashed I found myself in the only tree in the paddock.

He served his apprenticeship at, CAC Commonwealth aircraft incorporation. 1st class machinist Then transferred to assembling Pratt and Witney engines. And Nene jet engines for the vampire jet.

Max liked to build by finding planes on an a4 sheet and scale them up to whatever size he dreamed of. He likes to build twins as he says it’s a challenge. Likes to build using balsa & Ply.

He made a vacuum former to make canopies and is always willing to help make canopies for members.

Likes to tinker with magnesium and likes to invent ways to make things happen. (A bit of a scientist)

Max even went to learn to fly a full size aircraft in the 80’s. He has flown 18 hours of solo flying in a griming links.

It must have been fast in it’s day.

History of WMAA

History of WMAA by Ken Burt

We started out as a few mates getting together on a farm property near the corner of Hogan's and Tarneit Rd, (now developed and full of housing).  John Viney share farmed the property with his brother Robert. From memory John Viney, Frank Humphrys, Terry O'Brien, John Kelly, Max and Greg Wright, Brian Hodge, Peter MacAvaney, Bob Steiner, myself and a few others, about ten in all, flew there on a regular basis, late 1960s - early 1970s. Others that became involved were Peter Reibling, Tony Bereshnyi, Darren Hodge, and maybe some others. It was decided to form a club under the VMAA banner, and we affiliated ourselves as Werribee Radio Control Society. Our badge was designed in Malaysia and we became the 'weary bees'; Our newsletter at the time was 'Beelines'. Our membership increased to about 30 members. We held our first fly-in/fun festival on Sunday 9th February 1977.

Eventually the runway got bigger and the crop (oats or barley) got smaller. As a result of the resulting unrest with the owners (or lessees) of the land, we found ourselves looking for another site for our runway. Our membership dropped dramatically as we negotiated with the RAAF to fly with their club. So our new flying site became the RAAF aerial farm (way out west of the Werribee river, half way to Bacchus Marsh). Six members persevered as we sounded out the Werribee shire council for a suitable site. We were offered Greens road, (complete with rock walls each side - but no mowing needed. Wind direction notwithstanding); Laverton park at the end of the North/South runway of the then Laverton airbase, (now Williams Landing). or McGraths road (our present site.) It was at that time we met up with Ian Browning,

and some others who were trying to form a club, so we invited them to join us. Council offered us the use of the site if we could demonstrate that we were viable. Conditions were that we had to provide a 12ft gate to be fitted in the fence; a septic tank toilet facility etc. We cadged some sand and bricks from the council, left over from their building of the community complex in Ballan road. Someone came up with a seppo, someone else provided a gate, another came up with gate posts, and someone got a digging machine to bury the seppo, and so on. There was much activity slashing the field, bricking up the toilet, filling cow pods on the runway, cementing the gateposts in place etc. The name Werribee Radio Control Society it was mooted, did not well describe our activities and so it was changed to Werribee Model Aircraft Association and we were off and running.
